Nutrition plays a vital part in one’s stay at a long term care facility, as maintaining the desire to eat and the enjoyment of food minimizes the risk of weight loss and other health conditions, especially in the elderly. Nutrition intake is often affected by taste and smell dysfunction, which tends to begin at around 60 years of age and becomes more severe after 70 years of age. As a result, the fewer dietary restrictions that are ordered for a resident, the more likelihood there will be greater food intake. In addition, more sweet and salty foods may be necessary to gratify the appetite of residents and improve their nutritional intake.
