Oregon Pain Management - DEMO

This instructional course has been designed to provide current concepts and skills related to pain management. As research sheds light on pain management issues and treatment methods, healthcare professionals are expected to maintain competency in assessing and treating their patients’ pain, as well as managing the side effects of those pain control interventions. The national opioid abuse epidemic has changed the manner in which pain management education is conducted. The state of Oregon requires all healthcare professionals to complete 6 hours of continuing education on the subject of pain management, palliative care and end of life care, or a combination of both, to be completed prior to license renewal. This course satisfies the 6-hour requirement for all nurses (RN, LPN, and NP). Oregon also requires, in addition to the 6 hours, a specific one-hour, web-based pain education course called Changing the Conversation about Pain, provided only by the Oregon Pain Management Commission (OPMC). This course can be accessed at 

State Boards of Nursing have varying positions on the role of the LPN/LVN in the administration of parenteral pain control measures. A link to each state Board of Nursing is listed here. Competency requirements are obtained and maintained through the nurse’s employer, facility or institution.

This instructional course has been designed to provide current concepts and skills in pain management to the licensed nurse. 

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Explain the anatomy and physiology of nociceptive pain.
  2. Identify at least 2 pain assessment tools.
  3. Identify at least 2 controlled substance abuse assessment tools.
  4. Discuss at least 3 non-pharmacologic interventions used for pain management.
  5. Identify at least 5 pharmacologic interventions used for pain management.
  6. Explain the role of adjuvant drugs in pain management.
  7. Discuss the history and effects of the opioid abuse epidemic.
  8. Discuss Oregon legislation aimed at decreasing substance abuse.
  9. Explain appropriate patient education related to pain management.
